The San Francisco Public Utilities Commission last week gave final approval for replacing the 85-year-old Calaveras Dam near Fremont and Sunol in the East Bay. According to SFPUC spokeswoman Maureen Barry, the new $434-million dam project started bid advertising Jan. 31 with a pre-bid scheduled for Feb. 15 and contract award at the end of March. Construction is scheduled to start in the summer. The 6.2-megawatt cogeneration plant at One Penn Plaza is the largest cogeneration facility in a commercial office building in New York City, supplying 50% of electricity usage for the building as well as reducing its greenhouse gas emissions and carbon footprint by 40%. Caltrans last week finished excavating the new Devil�s Slide Tunnel in coastal San Mateo County. Construction crews from general contractor Kiewit removed the last of the soil from the northbound tunnel, while the last of the excavation for the southbound tunnel was completed a week earlier. �Tunneling is never easy,� says Bijan Sartipi, Caltrans District 4 director. �It requires intelligent planning, brilliant engineering and a lot of old-fashioned hard work.
