Stantec-AECOM Win $150M NAVFAC Contract for Maine Naval Shipyard Upgrade

A joint venture of Stantec and AECOM will provide multidisciplinary services to advance modernization of Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Kittery, Maine.
A joint venture of Stantec and AECOM has been selected by Naval Facilities Engineering Systems Command for a five-year, $150-million contract supporting the U.S. Navy’s Shipyard Infrastructure Optimization Program.
The firms will provide multidisciplinary services to advance modernization of Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Kittery, Maine, part of the Navy’s long-term effort to upgrade its public shipyard system and improve fleet readiness.
Besides the Portsmouth facility, the recapitalization program covers three other U.S. public naval shipyards—Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard and Intermediate Maintenance Facility in Hawaii, Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and Intermediate Maintenance Facility in Washington and Norfolk Naval Shipyard in Virginia.
Originally constructed in the 19th and early 20th centuries, the facilities required upgraded infrastructure and industrial plant equipment as well as reconfigured shipyard layouts and expanded capacity for current and future maintenance demands.
The investments would increase maintenance throughput, improve work conditions and enhance operating efficiency for roughly 37,000 workers employed across the public shipyard system, according to the Navy,
Stantec has supported the Navy program's planning and delivery efforts at all four shipyards. The firm is currently under contract, through a separate joint venture, to support activities at Pearl Harbor and Puget Sound and provides broader services to the U.S. Dept. of Defense, including the Navy, as well as the U.S. Air Force and U,S. Army.
Chris Williams, senior vice president, U.S. federal programs at Stantec, said in a statement that its “technical expertise” will “help modernize the Navy’s shipyard infrastructure in support of fleet readiness.”
AECOM, which said it has supported Navy infrastructure programs for decades, recently completed the area development plan for the Pearl Harbor shipyard and maintenance facility as part of the Navy upgrade program.
