At the heart of this hub for worship, learning and creative expression is an auditorium tailored for music performance.
The university’s new School of Music sits adjacent to the space, which includes expansive rehearsal halls, intimate practice rooms and a professional-grade live recording studio. Four distinct structural systems—steel, concrete, heavy timber and structural masonry—combined to support specific performance and aesthetic goals.
Material selection was intentional as well, utilizing Advantech sound-reducing plywood in high-performance areas. Meanwhile, a copper-clad steeple with an 8-ft cross was built at ground level and lifted into place using a custom-engineered pick point.
Meeting the auditorium’s state-of-the-art performance requirements required complete acoustical isolation from the rest of the building. This called for meticulous detailing between structural assemblies, MEP systems and architectural elements.
Layered ceiling systems, with a gypsum ceiling providing separation between the concrete deck and the acoustical tile ceiling, were paired with MEP systems mounted on sound isolation clips to minimize noise transfer.
