Unable to expand outward, the team had to maximize every square inch of the 50-year-old, 185,000-sq-ft building’s interior space to accommodate a dense and highly technical program, including more than 600 pieces of lab equipment.
One of the most significant challenges was integrating all necessary building systems within five existing mechanical mezzanines, each limited to a 7-ft slab-to-deck height. The team fast-tracked demolition to enable laser scanning early in the process, providing precise as-built conditions to inform the systems’ design.

High-efficiency air source heat pumps with heat recovery support both heating and cooling, setting a benchmark for sustainable laboratory design in urban environments.
A vivarium constructed as a concrete masonry unit structure within the existing building includes a cast-in-place concrete deck with more than 250 coordinated penetrations. Intensive preplanning ensured all in-wall roughing, penetrations and expansion joints were accurately installed to meet strict structural and environmental performance specifications.
