Formerly a New York City Dept. of Sanitation operations facility, the 5.5-acre park provides sports fields, playground, kayak launching zone and Manhattan’s first public beach.
Extending more than 400 ft into the Hudson River, the south shoreline was built with precast granite, reclaimed boulders from the previous sanitation site and precast tidal pools to promote marine growth in a new bio-habitat.
The north shoreline was constructed with a protective riprap shoreline and seawall to protect a newly installed salt marsh with under-drainage and weir structures. Raising the site up to 7 ft above the 100-year flood line to prevent future settlement required coordination with the Coast Guard and marine operations to transport and offload sand and fill from barges using conveyors.
A remote surveying system was installed to automatically monitor settlement of the surcharge material over four months, eliminating the cost of performing daily manual surveys.
