The $240-million comprehensive initiative to refurbish and expand key visitor and operational areas at one of the world’s premier botanical gardens also preserved historically significant elements. The focal point of the gardens is the new 32,000-sq-ft West Conservatory, a Mediterranean-inspired glasshouse that creates an extraordinary environment for plants from extreme climates. The conservatory’s unique asymmetrical design and reflective pool amplify the natural beauty of the landscaping, replacing outdated greenhouses with an accessible, research-focused garden experience that appears to float on water.
The project also expanded The Grove—which serves as the administration building—to include state-of-the-art studios, library and consolidated staff offices. The Cascade Garden was meticulously dismantled, preserved and reconstructed in a new location, while the Waterlily Court was renewed with enhanced features. To restore decorative exposed aggregate concrete at the historic Orchid House, a specialist was brought in to decode original installation techniques and replicate the historic mixes. After serving as the field office for the team, the historic Potting Shed was repurposed as a bonsai workshop and public viewing space.

The dismantling, preservation and reconstruction of the Cascade Garden represents an innovative approach to landscape conservation, with laser scans and detailed surveys used to catalog every stone and plant before relocation. This approach allowed the garden to be rebuilt piece-by-piece in its new location while thoughtfully incorporating ADA accessibility features. The project includes geothermal wells, expanded electrical redundancy and an innovative earth duct cooling system that demonstrate a forward-thinking approach to environmental responsibility.
The reimagined Longwood Gardens is used for horticultural displays, educational programs, events and dining. It also provides modern and efficient working spaces for staff. The project expertly balanced the needs of ongoing garden operations with construction, striving to minimize disruption and create a world-class botanical destination.
