An extensive design-build effort has stabilized Illinois’ last remaining shoreline, which has faced even more damaging impacts of late thanks to storms and record high water levels on Lake Michigan.
One of the primary design constraints was developing a solution to retain beach nourishment sand, which had historically eroded quickly due to the dynamic littoral transport processes along the Lake Michigan shoreline. To address this, the team implemented a multifaceted system of offshore and shore-connected breakwaters, groins and beach nourishment, tailored to the unique conditions of each of the three project areas.
More than 325,000 tons of stone and 530,000 cu yd of sand were placed within a tight 12-month schedule. GPS-guided excavators and dozers placed materials to exact specifications, both above and below water. The integration of habitat features, such as tern nests, anchored driftwood and vegetated blocks, further complicated the build, requiring careful coordination between habitat designers and construction crews. Multi-functional breakwaters—structures designed for wave attenuation and sand retention, but also for ecological enhancement—were also installed.
