Aging pavement, inadequate facilities and safety concerns amid increasing traffic were among the issues facing Reno-Tahoe International Airport that led to a comprehensive $12-million reconstruction effort.
Major improvements included zero-height loading zone curbs, an inverse crown roadway with a trench drain system and crash-resistant bollards to protect the terminal.
Throughout the 14-month project, crews coordinated their activities amid nonstop airport operations as well as multiple concurrent projects within the same space, including the ticketing hall expansion and terminal loop road reconstruction.
Despite the busy site, all critical systems, from power to storm drains and customer access remained fully functional throughout the process as crews widened pedestrian walkways, reduced lane widths, elevated crosswalks and installed energy-efficient LED canopy lighting and digital dynamic signage.
Work wrapped under budget and ahead of schedule in September 2024.
