Featuring a four-lane, 1, 500-ft divided roadway, this $16.6-million project created a continuous route for the city of Lewisville, providing motorists with a parallel path to SH 121. Scope included a new two-span, 100-ft-long railroad bridge and track. A top down approach ensured the bridge structure would be done before excavation finished for the bridge underpass. Crews cleared down to the bottom of the abutments and center pier cap, then installed drilled shafts and columns with permanent casings.
However, placing the roadway underneath the railroad created a depressed section, so a 200-hp stormwater pump station and a drainage system were installed to remove stormwater during rain events. The system includes gravity drainage with four 18-in. to 30-in. reinforced concrete pipes and associated inlets along with an 8-ft by 6-ft precast concrete box culvert that brings stormwater to the pump station.
The project also included about 2,700 ft of temporary shoofly track to build the new, permanent rail track. Given the complexity and interdependencies of project components, critical path method scheduling helped guide planning and execution. Phased construction sequencing allowed for multiple work fronts to proceed in parallel, minimizing downtime and accelerating progress. Underpass construction posed significant logistical and engineering challenges due to the confined work zone and proximity to active rail lines.
