A $55.7-million renovation transformed this one-mile stretch of Broadway Street into a safer and more accessible connection between the historic downtown area and its northern inner-city neighborhoods. This involved removing a traffic lane, adding more sidewalks and creating accommodations for pedestrians and public transit.
Crews widened sidewalks and driveway approaches, improved traffic signals and drainage, and installed utilities, extensive landscaping and pedestrian lighting. The project team also replaced an integral colored stamped concrete sidewalk with traditional brick inlay sidewalk, which reduced costs by $1.7 million.
Historical and archaeological preservation plans were made before construction began to ensure certain downtown San Antonio features remained intact during construction. And with limited room within the right-of-way to design and build the project’s new utilities without impacting existing utilities, careful sequencing was vital to ensure safe and accurate installation.
Since some of the water and sewage lines dated back to the 1800s, the team relied not just on BIM, but also dug into the ground to inspect the lines.
Throughout the project, crews installed 4,750 sq ft of bioswales to capture and treat storm runoff. These low-impact development drainage features filter street water runoff through layers of engineered soil and gravel to lower the number of contaminants.
