Flooding and other building damage from Superstorm Sandy in 2012 is a distant memory following capital improvements that included a 10-story addition, interior renovations, resilient power systems and a new 4-ft-high floodwall.
To maximize resilience, critical services were elevated to the second floor above the expected elevation of a 500-year flood. The first floor consists mainly of the floodwall-protected lobby and parking, while the campus was remodeled to maintain essential vehicular traffic even under the most severe weather conditions. Other features include spacious operating rooms; suites for endoscopy procedures and in-patient dialysis; single-patient rooms; dedicated spaces for behavioral health patients; and diagnostic and interventional radiology.
With two firms sharing construction management duties, teamwork and trust were essential, according to the submission. A project dispute resolution mechanism included third-party mediation and a robust monitoring and evaluation system.
