Henry Ford Health has chosen HDR to lead an architectural engineering team in the design of a 1-million-sq-ft-plus hospital campus expansion in Detroit.

Others on the $2.5-billion project team are: BTD, composed of Barton Malow, Turner Construction and Detroit-based Dixon Construction Services, which will serve as construction manager, Boston-based Tsoi Kobus Design, a planning, architecture and interior design firm and Hamilton Anderson, a Detroit-based African American-owned architecture and landscape architecture practice.

“This was a rigorous and lengthy selection process, with team members from all corners and disciplines of our organization playing a role in ensuring we selected firms that could deliver exactly what our team, patients and community needs and deserves,” said Henry Ford Health President and CEO Bob Riney in a statement.

All vendor contracts for the project contain targets of 35% commitments from minority- and women-owned businesses.

“We’ll also work with our selected partners to engage and include diverse subcontractors,” said Robin Damschroder, executive vice president, chief financial and business officer for Henry Ford Health in a statement.

As ENR previously reported, construction is slated to begin next year on the expansion that is directly across the street from the existing hospital. Plans include a tower with patient rooms and an expanded emergency department, in addition to various labs and spaces for medical procedures.

That expansion is intended to “anchor” a larger neighborhood redevelopment in Detroit, according to Henry Ford Health. The hospital and Michigan State University Health Sciences are also partnering on a medical research facility in the neighborhood just south of the hospital expansion site.

The development plans include housing, retail space, a parking garage and park.
