The “DBIA Buff Builders” design-build team from the University of Colorado Boulder captured the nation’s top student design-build prize after competing before a jury of industry professionals at the 2021 Design-Build Conference & Expo in Denver.

The CU Boulder team was one of three finalists in the 2021 National Design-Build Student Competition, which presented its design and construction plans for a student health facility on an American college campus. The University of Florida placed second, and the team from Arizona State finished third.

The competition began with 16 student teams from 14 universities competing at the regional level. Student teams from leading design, construction and engineering universities across the country entered the competition to demonstrate design-build best practices by proposing their unique delivery solution for this year’s project.

Eight regional winners were selected to compete in the second phase of the competition by responding to an RFP. The top three finalists were then selected to present their project plan in Denver.

Project team members, community partners and city officials of Loveland, Colo., recently broke ground on a 55-plus active adult rental project called Avenida Loveland. The apartments are located within the Centerra master-planned community and are developed by Avenida Partners LLC.

The 182,000-sq-ft complex will expand the senior residential options available at Centerra by offering a community tailor-made for independent seniors over the age of 55. The three-story property will feature a modern farmhouse architectural design and offer 154 senior apartments consisting of one- and two-bedroom floor plans with contemporary finishes. There will also be a 10,000-sq-ft, two-story amenity space and leasing office. Community amenities will include a swimming pool and spa, fitness rooms, a pickle ball court, a theater and private dining areas. Brinkman Construction is the general contractor and Element Architects designed the project. Construction is expected to complete in late 2022.
