Every bullet, grenade, artillery shell and explosive used at Fort Carson will pass through new blast-proof facilities designed to contain live ammunition. Dealing with more than 26 million rounds a year, these blast-proof facilities needed to be designed and constructed with immense scrutiny to allow the mission of the 4th Infantry Division to continue safely.

The facilities include a 24,000-sq-ft ammunition inspection repair and repacking facility, a 16,000-sq-ft ammunition storehouse, four 2,240-sq-ft earth covered magazines and a 12,000-sq-yd open storage area. In addition, crews provided concrete housekeeping pads for new mechanical and electrical equipment and installed fire and sound-rated walls and partitions. The roof structures are composed of standing-seam metal roofing on steel decking. Windows and skylights were constructed in accordance with antiterrorism-force protection requirements, and exterior doors were outfitted with blast-resistant glass.
