Old and new come together on the Mississippi River with the addition of a cast-in-place, balanced, cantilevered, segmental bridge located just upstream from its rehabilitated historic predecessor, which features a unique Warren through truss design. For the new bridge, the project team minimized accelerated schedule risks through early construction of river piers and simplified, reusable concrete forms. A multicylinder temperature monitoring system provided real-time transmission of concrete temperature from field to lab, where the team could replicate the curing conditions. In addition to providing greater accuracy compared with conventional test practices, the process cut at least one day off each segment’s pour schedule.

Encountering unexpected deterioration on the existing bridge, the project team applied 3D modeling to identify 10 types of repeatable repairs. The process helped speed development of revised engineering drawings for owner approval. The five-year project finished ahead of schedule and below budget.
