To modernize the 680,000-sq-ft Philips Arena for the NBA’s Atlanta Hawks, the team broke the project into three phases. Unforeseen conditions proved to be the main obstacle for contractors undertaking the top-to-bottom overhaul, which rebuilt the venue’s interior and reconfigured its layout. The project team performed its own site investigations and brought in MEP subcontractors early to inspect the building and provide feedback. During construction, it was imperative for the project team to make quick decisions so as to not delay work. The stadium now features a 360-degree concourse, new video boards and improved sightlines.
