The 123,101-sq-ft expansion nearly doubles the inpatient capacity of this community hospital, adding emergency, diagnostic imaging, surgical services, a women’s floor and a multistory lobby. To complete the $43.64-million project on time and on budget in August 2017, the team divided work into three phases to maintain full operations throughout the facility.

Upgrading the building’s mechanical, electrical, plumbing and medical gas system was challenging. For example, crews added an additional natural-gas line and meter to the central plant. This task required close coordination to ensure that plant operations could handle the increased loads as new floors were turned over.

The team used laser scanning, modeling and lean planning, and coordinated just-in-time deliveries because of the lack of laydown areas.

With an aluminum-and-glass curtain wall designed to withstand impacts of up to 225 mph, the facility remained open during Hurricane Harvey in 2017.
