As the signature anchor to Gabe Nesbit Park, this 80,000-sq-ft community center includes 10,000 sq ft of water surface area in an outdoor pool and indoor natatorium.

The $31.8-million center has an innovative mechanical and wall system at the natatorium that required a waterproofed lightweight plaster. In addition, overhead systems at the natatorium pool had to be installed three stories above the floor. Standard motorized aerial lifts could not be used because of the sloped ground level, so the team added an elevated work platform over the space.

Specific color requirements for the building’s exterior face brick caused schedule delays when the first delivery did not meet owner approval. The team devised a plan that coordinated other material requirements to continue with some aspects of the exterior until replacement brick could be manufactured and delivered to the site. To catch up, the team sequenced crews and equipment to accelerate the installation.

The aquatics center was delivered on time and on budget in March 2017.
