Horse Mesa Dam Rock Debris Talus Stabilization
Apache Junction, Ariz.
Award of Merit

Owner/Developer Salt River Project
General Contractor DBA Construction Inc.
Lead Design Firm Geological Consultants Inc.
Subcontractors Adams Contracting and Atwell/SCS

The $2.31-million Horse Mesa Dam Rock Debris Talus Stabilization project mitigates a rock-fall debris talus deposit located in extremely remote terrain at Salt River Project’s Horse Mesa Dam, east of Phoenix. This deposit was approximately 200 ft wide across the bottom and more than 100 ft high, existing at a near-equilibrium slope. The construction team used onsite materials to build gabion baskets and provide backfill for the slope protection. Teams also erected a catch berm parallel to the roadway at the top of the slope to catch any debris and to protect the existing roadway. Work wrapped up on time in September 2015.
