The renovation of Recovery School District’s McDonogh 42 Elementary Charter School added nearly 3,500 sq ft, along with an upgrade to the 73,672-sq-ft school. Teams integrated a new air-conditioning system while maintaining the high ceilings so that historic windows and transoms were not covered. The design team proposed using a ductless, variable refrigerant flow system, with ductwork for exhaust and outside air only. Existing wood flooring was salvaged after demolition and reused in the corridors as part of the finish flooring; exterior window sashes were reused as well.
