Nebraska Furniture Mart–Texas is Berkshire Hathaway’s anchor project for the Grandscape mixed-use retail development. The project is a 1.3-million-sq-ft distribution center with a 330,000-sq-ft mezzanine, a 564,000-sq-ft retail facility and 2,000-car garage. The distribution center used a tilt-wall exterior structure with steel, joists and a metal deck.

Super-flat floors were critical for the 630,025-sq-ft distribution center. Floors were made of 100 individually placed, 11-in.-thick concrete strips ranging from 13 ft to 15 ft wide, with a constant length of 395 ft. Pouring one or two strips a day, depending on their width, the team placed a total of 21,500 cu yd of concrete in 58 days.

The project team clocked 986,682 man-hours and an OSHA recordable incident rate of 2.2. As part of the safety program, Turner performed a formal, site-specific safety orientation and required OSHA 10-hour training, plus OSHA 30-hour training, for Turner operations. The team also held weekly toolbox talks by trade, conducted equipment-specific training for operators and held monthly safety stand-downs.
