Work is ongoing on Stamford Hospital's $450-million expansion as crews are in the process of erecting the structural steel for a new building that broke ground in May.
Upon completion in the summer of 2016, the project will have added 641,463 sq ft to the hospital, whose main campus is a collection of buildings with some dating back to the early 1900s.
Work includes adding patient care units with private bathrooms and centralized nurses stations for more flexible care delivery and two family lounges per floor. It also features an emergency department with separate treatment areas for trauma, cardiac, urgent, behavioral health and pediatric patients; larger surgical suites to accommodate the latest technology; and a new pediatric unit. The project will also expand the intensive care unit; provide a central location for all of the Heart & Vascular Institute services; and add dedicated parking space, along with individual points of entry for walk-in and ambulance arrivals.
The team is also adding a central utility plant, which is nearing completion and scheduled to be operational by late December, says a representative for construction manager Skanska USA. The WHR Architects-designed project is 22% complete and is expected to create a total of 500 jobs.
