St. Joseph’s College has awarded Racanelli Construction, Melville, N.Y., a $12.5-million contract for construction of a 30,000-sq-ft athletic facility at its Brooklyn campus. Racanelli will serve as the general contractor on the project, which is scheduled to begin this week with completion slated for June 2013. Bentel & Bentel Architects/Planners, A.I.A., Locust Valley, N.Y., is the architect on the project.

The three-floor facility will be built in an historic section of Brooklyn where there are space constraints, and will require shoring and bracing of existing areas, Racanelli says. The facility will include a state-of-the-art basketball arena, gym floor and equipment, cardio studio, dance studio, locker rooms, telescoping bleachers, and offices. It will also feature a glass curtain wall system, 110-inch truss spans, a lobby comprised of stainless steel panels and stone, as well as an exterior roof-top terrace. A parking garage will be built underneath the facility.

The project will also aim to become LEED-certified by featuring energy-efficient mechanical and electrical systems, a carbon monoxide monitor system for the garage and a dimming lighting system.

Separately, Racanelli is also working on a $17.3-million project in Queens for Arverne by the Sea YMCA. The 36,600-sq-ft building began in September and is expected to be completed by March 2013.
