A Holocaust memorial, an airport runway, an orangutan habitat and a tied-arch bridge are among the enterprises that a panel of industry professionals awarded top honors for ENR Midwest's Best Projects competition, an annual program recognizing outstanding design and construction in a variety of categories.

The Cube, an innovative glass structure in Skokie, Ill., received top honors in the small projects category.

Panelists evaluated dozens of entries on the basis of quality, innovation, safety, community impact and the ability of the project teams to overcome unique challenges. In all, projects were honored in 18 categories, ranging from health care and higher education to transportation, renovation and specialty contracting.

Panelists also evaluated entries solely on the basis of safety, awarding top honors to Waukesha County Health and Human Services Building in Waukesha, Wis.

All winning projects will compete against winners from other regions in ENR's national Best of the Best Projects 2014 competition. ENR Midwest is indebted to panelists who not only donated their time to review entries but also collaborated as a jury to select winning projects. Congratulations to this year's winners.
