David Bals has been named national data center practice leader for the facilities business line of URS Corp.'s infrastructure and environment division. Bals, who is located in the firm's Columbus, Ohio, office, is streamlining procurement of architectural and engineering services for data center and mission-critical projects. Bals previously served as electrical engineering department manager for the Columbus office.

Kyle Pieters has joined Neenah, Wis.-based contractor Miron Construction Co. as project manager. Pieters recently graduated from University of Wisconsin–Stout with a degree in construction and a double minor in risk control and business administration.

Samuel R. Barnes and Robert J. Millies have been elected to the board of directors of Jackson, Mich.-based designer Commonwealth. Barnes, vice president of power generation and energy with Commonwealth, is a 22-year industry veteran. Millies is a section manager with the firm's transmission and distribution engineering department and has been active in the industry for more than 20 years.

Martin Chorkey has joined St. Louis-based engineer Horner & Shifrin Inc. as a structural engineer. Chorkey has five years' experience in the design, rehabilitation, inspection, rating and administration of bridges.

Philip Ferrar has joined St. Louis-based designer and builder S.M. Wilson as an estimator. Ferrar has 13 years of industry experience and currently is enrolled in a masters of construction management program at Washington University in St. Louis.

William S. Hornbake has been named vice president of project controls and support with Indianapolis-based contractor Hunt Construction Group. Hornbake is working with Hunt's BIM/VDC, safety, scheduling and project management departments to establish best practices for projects and clients.

Peter Josefchak has joined the Chicago office of architect-engineer Stantec to focus on major railway projects. Josefchak, who has more than 42 years of experience in engineering and railroad transportation, has participated on projects for Chicago Metra, Chicago Transit Authority, CN Rail and Union Pacific.

Thomas Kafkes has joined Chicago-based Summit Design + Build as director of business development. Kafkes has been involved in 300 projects valued in excess of $2.25 billion. He has worked on a variety of project types, including office, retail, industrial, multifamily and single-family residential.

Vickie Apostolopoulos has joined Chicago-based architect Solomon Cordwell Buenz as director of business development for the firm's higher education practice. Apostolopoulos worked in a similar capacity for the Chicago Architecture Foundation and Washington, D.C.-based National Trust for Historic Preservation, among other organizations.

Andre Zoldan has been appointed chief information officer with Detroit-based architect-engineer Albert Kahn Associates Inc. Zoldan, who has 20 years of industry experience, previously served as senior associate and director of advanced design technologies with the firm.
