On November 17, 2016 OSHA issued an 88-page final rule updating the 44-year old general industry Walking-Working Surfaces standard. The stated purpose of the update was to increase consistency between construction and general industry requirements, create a stand-alone regulation for personal fall protection systems, modify requirements for fixed ladders, and a few others. The regulation includes figures to help the industry visualize certain requirements. It is important to note that the standard does not create a large amount of new requirements. Many employers will find themselves already in compliance. Unless otherwise noted, all components of the rule take effect January 17, 2017.
