A Dallas-based joint-venture team of Balfour Beatty Construction and McCarthy has won a $503-million design-build contract for a replacement hospital at Fort Hood near Killeen, Texas. The contract was awarded on Sept. 10 by the Army Corps of Engineers, Fort Worth district. Two other teams short-listed for the project included a JV of Hensel Phelps Construction Co. with contractor Robins & Morton and a San Antonio-based team of Turner Construction and Zachry.
The market is generally healthy and steadily growing, and margins are up for large specialty contractors. Further, advances in design tools and owner demand for collaboration are giving subcontractors a seat at the table early on in projects.
