SMarter Crane Controls: Monitoring System Reduces Sway and Snags
Konecranes has introduced new options for the Smart Features software on its SMARTON line of cranes. Automatic hook centering prevents dangerous side-pull situations by detecting when a load is not below the hook and, as necessary, adjusting the crane before performing the lift. Snag prevention halts the crane when, while moving the crane, it detects that the rope is caught on an obstacle. Another new safety feature is active sway control, which reads the operators inputs for moving the crane and calculates the optimal acceleration to minimize swaying of loads. Cordless Nailer and Stapler: 4.0-Ah Batteries Provide Longer Run Time
The Porter Cable 20V Max Nailer and Stapler both run on Porter Cable 20V Max lithium-ion batteries. The 18 GA Brad Nailer can hold nails ranging from 5⁄8 in. to 2 in., with a magazine capacity of 100. It can drive 1,300 nails on a single charge when using a Porter Cable 4.0-Ah battery. The 18 GA Narrow Crown Stapler accepts fasteners in lengths ranging from 1⁄2 in. to 11⁄2 in. and can hold 100 fasteners. Like the nailer, it can drive 1,300 fasteners on a single 4.0-Ah battery charge. Porter-Cable; www.portercable.com

Compact Excavator: Powerful Breakout Force
The Gehl Z55 Compact Excavator has an operating weight of 11,850 lb in its open-canopy configuration. The excavator is powered by a 47.6-hp Yanmar Tier 4 Final engine and has an electronic throttle; it boasts a bucket breakout force of 9,419 lb, with a boom offset swing of 68° in both directions. The compact excavator’s angle blade can tilt 25° in either direction for backfill. An Eco Mode switch in the cab allows the operator to reduce engine speed by 10% without a major drop in power, which can save fuel during periods of inactivity.
