An independent jury of design and construction professionals selected ENR's 2012 Best Projects in the MidAtlantic region. Entries were judged on five criteria: teamwork and overcoming challenges; safety; innovation and contribution; construction quality and craftsmanship; and function and aesthetic quality. The jury could select one Project of the Year and multiple Awards of Merit in each category. Jurors also picked a Best Overall Project from any category. Jurors abstained from voting on projects where there was a conflict of interest. This year, a jury of safety professionals also chose winners for our first-ever Best Project Safety awards.

Fundamental guiding principles such as attention to technical quality, consistent budget compliance, focus on award-winning design and exceptional client services ground Ortiz's approach to creating innovative and thoughtful solutions to challenging projects.

Michelle Honey is a construction management executive with more than 25 years of experience. She leads the firm's business development in the construction and renovation of college facilities. This includes academic, research and teaching labs, performing arts centers, athletic facilities, residences, libraries, student unions, administrative buildings as well as hospital systems and clinical, health care and veterinary science facilities.

Christine Fiori

Director of Professional & Academic Outreach

Christine Fiori brings a varied background to Virginia Tech. Her research interests revolve around construction education, historical construction, leadership and construction safety. Her interest in ancient construction led to a National Science Foundation grant to explore construction techniques of the Inca, specifically the Inca road throughout Peru. Over the past four years she has led teams of experts into remote areas of the Andes to research the design, construction and maintenance of the road.

Christopher Stone is a structural engineer with more than 30 years of experience in the design and management of public, private and commercial projects. He is president of one of Virginia's largest full-service international architecture, engineering and interior design firms. Stone was the 2011-2012 president of the National Society of Professional Engineers and is the 2012-2013 chair for the Council on Federal Procurement of Architectural and Engineering Services.
