The City of Alexandria, Va., has reached a milestone in its efforts to electrify its DASH bus fleet with the installation of an in-route pantograph charger and associated infrastructure.

The system enables DASH buses to charge while in service, thereby expanding route flexibility, extending operational range and reducing downtime. The project, led by energy infrastructure provider ABM, also included installation of power cabinets, electrical infrastructure and civil foundation work.

Alexandria’s efforts to transition its DASH fleet to 100% zero-emissions vehicles have been underway since 2019. Using funding from a variety of sources, including a $24-million federal grant awarded in 2023, DASH has deployed 16 battery electric buses, with another 20 vehicles funded and currently in procurement.
