A Turner Construction-Wohlsen Construction joint venture will build a $6-billion data center in Lancaster, Pa., for New Jersey-based cloud computing startup CoreWeave as part of a plan to create an artificial intelligence infrastructure hub in the region.
The estimated 100-MW project, announced at the Energy and Innovation Summit held July 15 in Pittsburgh, has capacity to expand to 300 MW as a facility “purpose-built” for AI use cases, said CoreWeave CEO Michael Intrator. It would add to CoreWeave’s 28 data centers across the U.S., said the developer that will be the site's sole tenant.
The size. exact location and estimated completion of the facility, co-developed by Chirisa Technology Parks and Machine Investment Group, has not been disclosed. The project is expected to create 600 skilled worker jobs during its build phase and up to 175 full-time operating and technical roles.
Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro said the project will position the broader Mid-Atlantic region to become a hot spot for data center development to boost the artificial intelligence economy.
“Pennsylvania is competing again and bringing in billions of dollars in new investment ... to support our technology sector, and CoreWeave’s $6 billion investment will continue to build on that work,” he said. “We are ensuring [the state] is open to major investments like this one ... by investing in our workforce, building out more energy resources, securing funding for site development, speeding up ... permitting, licensing and certification processes, and working to make sure Pennsylvania continues to be a national energy leader.”
Sen. Dave McCormick (R-Pa.) termed the project a “transformative investment” in the state.
