As COVID-19 spread through Los Angeles County’s growing homeless population, the team designed, built and received final approvals in just 120 days for a 60,000-sq-ft interim housing facility. Modular construction helped achieve the accelerated schedule. More than 230 safe, comfortable housing spaces were configured out of 60 locally repurposed shipping containers and 20 mobile trailers custom-manufactured in Idaho. The modular wood administration building, which contains a kitchen, dining area, offices and laundry facilities, was manufactured in Texas and shipped to the site in nine pieces. The team scrambled to get foundation work underway while also creating an onsite treatment plant to manage contaminated soils. Applying an intricate installation process, the team craned the dual-unit containers into a three-floor configuration, each level with a prefabricated elevator. The administration units arrived next, followed by the five-unit trailers.
