Built on a barren brownfield site that was previously used for industrial facilities and an amusement park—including a condemned wooden roller coaster—extensive sitework was required to create a 102-acre mixed-use development in Dania Beach, Fla. To prepare the site, deep dynamic compaction was required on more than 40 acres as well as refilling deep ponds and pits. Extensive infrastructure also had to be rerouted. Offsite road work associated with the project required boring two miles under a residential neighborhood, canals, railroad lines and Interstate 95. The project was split into two construction phases spanning four years. The first phase, which broke ground in October 2015, delivered a 325,000-sq-ft shopping center with retail and restaurant spaces. As the first phase neared completion, crews started work on the second portion of the project, which consisted of an entertainment facility, office space, two six-story parking decks and 600,000 sq ft of retail and restaurants. The four-year project, which logged 154,615 work hours, was completed on time and on budget with no lost-time accidents.
