This building modernization included new construction as well as extensive renovations, adding nearly 95,000 sq ft to a 130-year-old government complex. The project upgraded all electrical systems in the Capitol, along with the installation of new audio-visual equipment and improved lighting, including LED retrofits and a lightning protection system.

Originally, light was provided to the Capitol by gas lamps and skylights. Over time, fluorescent and incandescent lighting was added. This renovation includes 3,500 light fixtures, with 20% of those being historic or historic replicas. Every light in the complex is now LED, including new stage lighting that illuminates the stained glass ceilings in the House and Senate chambers.
