This project created the first net-zero energy archives facility in the U.S. and meets San Diego County’s requirement for LEED Gold certification. The facility combines several public services, including property records, taxes, birth and death certificates, civil wedding ceremonies and historical records. The one-story building used tilt-up concrete panels and open web-steel joists for fast construction. Its column-free spaces house a one-stop-shop lobby with public-service counters and self-help kiosks. Key features include ample daylighting and public art in the main lobby; state-of-the-art mechanical, lighting and fire-protection equipment; a high-density archive-storage system; PV-clad butterfly roof and shade canopy in the parking lot; and an outdoor wedding arbor.
