The scope of the Westdrift Manhattan Beach renovation project included both demolition and construction at the continuously operating hotel.

The project’s demolition work included removal of the cast-in-place main lobby staircase, demolition of the hotel’s restaurant and three ballrooms, and the removal of the lobby and guest arrival facades. The redesign added a new exterior steel staircase with glass handrails and 26-ft standing-metal decorative tube cladding as well as a renovated lobby, landscaping and pool –– all completed in five months during hotel operations. Crews placed more than 45,000 sq ft of plank tile patterns from the entry through the lobby and installed 26-ft interior wooden screen walls. The city’s permitting and approval process for an occupied facility under construction was challenging, as was coordinating design with a local architect and with interior updates from New York and San Francisco. The project included more than 13 design revisions, and the design team faced a time crunch to redesign off-the-cuff and ensure that the city of Manhattan Beach approved the permitted changes.
