The renovation of the outdated Del Amo Fashion Center was no small feat, according to Best Projects judges. In reimagining the existing 2.2-million-sq-ft facility, which sits on 50 acres, the project team updated a confusing patchwork of additions that linked two existing malls separated by a city boulevard and unified them into a premier shopping destination. To accomplish this, the team had to work around the fully operating facility for two construction phases, utilizing close communication and weekly coordination meetings to identify potential issues prior to fabrication and procurement of materials with lengthy lead times. Issues were discovered early enough to minimize impact and maintain the overall construction schedule.
