Through August of 2009, the nonbuilding market for the metro area of Miami, Miami Beach and Fort Lauderdale is well ahead of other regions in the Southeast Construction coverage area, according to McGraw-Hill Construction, the magazine’s publisher.
The Miami-Fort Lauderdale area has experienced nearly $2.3 billion in new nonbuildiing project starts through August, or more than double its amount at the same time last year. The new total was enough for the South Florida metro to rank fourth nationally.
On a regional basis, Miami’s tally was approximately triple that of the second-place metro, Atlanta, which experienced roughly $713.6 in new nonbuilding starts, or 55% lower than a year ago.
The Orlando area’s nonbuilding market has dipped 32% compared to last year, but its $699.5-million total garnered it third place. Port St. Lucie-Fort Pierce, Fla., was the biggest mover in the top 10, improving by 665% over the same period of a year ago to total $569.3 million through August.
The Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater market also grew compared to a year ago. Its 50% uptick resulted in a $461.9-million total, good for fifth place on the regional chart.
Rounding out the Southeast’s top ten were Jacksonville, Fla.; Charlotte, N.C.; Sarasota, Fla.; Charleston, S.C.; and Raleigh, N.C. All of these metros experienced declines compared to last year.
