9. I-405, Braided Ramps Interchange Improvements

PROJECT COST: $107.5 Million

Started: December 2009
Target Completion: Fall 2012
Owner: WSDOT
General Contractor: Atkinson Construction
Engineer: Jacobs Engineering
Consultant: HNTB
Subcontractors: Totem Electric; KLB; Novito; Lakeside Paving

Crews will build seven bridges as part of the braided ramps along roughly 1.5 mi of I-405 (from N.E. 8th Street to S.R. 520) and 1 mi of SR 520 from I-405 to 124th Avenue N.E. The project will help address congestion and improve safety by eliminating traffic weaves through improved ramps and enhanced, wider bridges. Partially funded by the Stimulus Act, this design-build project is nicknamed the “Bellevue Braids” because the ramps linking I-405 to SR 520 resemble braids.

10. University of Washington Medical Center

PROJECT COST: $104 Million

Started: Fall 2009
Target Completion: August 2011
Owner: University of Washington
Design Firm: NBBJ
General Contractor: Skanska USA Building
Structural Engineer: MKA

This Seattle project includes the construction of a new building directly south of the Medical Center’s Pacific Tower. The expansion is being planned in two phases, with Skanska as the contractor for Phase 1: a five-story addition plus mechanical/electrical interstitial mezzanine story. The structure totals 117,700 sq ft with a mechanical basement level of another 7,400 sq ft. A roof-top penthouse will be configured to accommodate a future vertical expansion linked to the existing facility.

11. Sunnyside Water Treatment Plant

PROJECT COST: $89.2 Million

Started: January 2009
Target Completion: December 2011
Owner: Lake Stevens Sewer District
Design Firm: Gray & Osborne
General Contractor: Balfour Beatty Infrastructure
Construction Manager: Gray & Osborne
Subcontractors: Hawk Mechanical; Elcon Corporation

This project involves the construction of a new 5 million gallon-per-day plant on a 14-acre site in Lake Stevens, including wastewater intake, an aeration system, ultraviolet disinfection and all the other parts of the treatment process. Other structures and earthworks in the project include a generator building and administration building. Balfour Beatty Infrastructure will also furnish and install an effluent pipeline in a trench to an outfall in the existing slough, plus a lift station and sewer pipeline just north of the plant. The project was designed to allow for future expansion.

12. I-405, I-5 to SR 169 Stage 2 Widening & SR 515 Interchange

PROJECT COST: $83.6 Million

Started: March 2009
Target Completion: November 2011
Owner: WSDOT
Design-Build: I-405 Corridor Design-Builders, a CH2M Hill/ Gary Merlino JV
Subcontractors: Mowat Construction Co.; Elcon Corp. Terra Dynamics

The Renton Stage 2 Project area is part of the most congested section of I-405 from Tukwila to Bellevue. As part of this project, crews will add capacity on I-405 to help the flow of traffic and improve freeway access to Renton by adding a new lane in each direction on I-405 from SR 167 to SR 169, reconstructing the Benson Road Bridge over I-405 and building a new half-diamond interchange at SR 515 to help reduce congestion at nearby interchanges with SR 167 and SR 169. The new interchange includes an on-ramp from SR 515 to northbound I-405 and an off-ramp from southbound I-405 to SR 515.
