Award of Merit Government/Public Building: Windmill Library and Services Center, Las Vegas
This sleek, modern facility contains three distinct areas: an open and airy library (with an auditorium), offices/administration and a service zone. Building materials include structural steel, metal forms and architectural panels. The facility has a bevy of green features, such as a 103.5-kW photovoltaic system that produces 12.5% of the library's power needs; overall energy use is designed to operate at least 35% above ASHRAE standards. Other sustainable design elements include daylighting and water efficiency. During construction, workers logged more than 24,000 hours with no accidents.
