FRC4 is the third Facebook facility built by DPR Construction and Fortis Construction in Forest City, N.C. The 24/7 data center is a "cold storage" facility, meaning its servers support Facebook's older, less accessed data. To hasten construction, contractors built it in two phases, with Data Hall A and the central utilities building constructed first, followed by Data Halls B and C. Each 25,000-sq-ft facility uses a system designed to efficiently control air flow from fourteen air-handling units. The campus was built with Facebook's goal of creating the most energy-efficient data centers in the world. The buildings were situated on the site to take advantage of the predominant wind direction and minimize excavation. The facility is seeking LEED-Gold certification.
