$2.4B DEP Green R&D Program Seeks Engineers

The New York City Dept. of Environmental Protection has issued a request for proposals for an engineering team to help on a $2.4-billion, long-term research and development program focused on greening waterways.

The Green Infrastructure and R&D Program will use both public and private funding to increase the city's installation of green infrastructure by 2030, DEP says. This includes bioswales, stormwater green sheets, rain gardens, blue roofs, sub-surface detention systems, green roofs, porous pavement, permeable pavers and constructed wetlands.

The program will "significantly reduce the discharges from the city's combined sewer system, which can occur during heavy rainstorms," the DEP said in a June 14 statement. The agency says it will also spend an additional $2.9 billion in cost-effective gray infrastructure upgrades.

During the next three years, DEP plans to invest $187 million in the program. The selected engineering team will be responsible for monitoring existing and new installations, assessing their performance over time, performing experiments, analyzing the data and providing guidance to support the overall program, DEP says.

NJDOT Awards CCA Pulaski Skyway Contract

The New Jersey Dept. of Transportation awarded Jersey City, N.J.-based CCA Civil, a China Construction America company, a $126-million contract to build the agency's northbound deck replacement of the Pulaski Skyway, says Steve Schapiro, an NJDOT spokesman.

Roadwork is currently under way on the structure's elevated highway, he says. When completed next spring, deck replacement work can begin, he adds. Completion is set for February 2015.

The 80-year-old, 18,480-ft-long elevated highway connects Newark and Jersey City and serves as an express link to and from New York's Holland Tunnel.

The skyway is one of several bridges in the tristate region slated for an upgrade. These include the five-year, $235.7-million upper deck replacement of the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge that connects Brooklyn and Staten Island. Tutor Perini Civil, New Rochelle, N.Y., is scheduled to begin roadway construction on the bridge in 2014.
