Members of the Associated Builders and Contractors Rocky Mountain Chapter were recognized May 21 by their peers in the commercial construction industry for outstanding safety achievements at the annual Associated Builders and Contractors Safety and Scholarship Awards Banquet. More than 170 ABC members and guests were in attendance at the Denver Marriott City Center in downtown Denver.

The Safety Training and Evaluation Process (STEP) awards are granted by ABC National based on submitted applications. The awards are given in five categories: bronze, silver, gold, platinum and diamond. They are based on 20 key elements of a contractor’s safety program, including safety policies, employee commitment and training, management commitment and budgeting.

Receiving the highest awards of the evening were Bergelectric Inc., Denver; Hensel Phelps, Greeley; HITT Contracting, Golden; Mortenson Construction, Denver; and TIC The Industrial Co., Englewood. These firms were the only Rocky Mountain Chapter members to achieve the elite Diamond STEP level.

Platinum level winners included Casey Industrial Inc., Westminster; dcb Construction Co. Inc., Denver; Douglass Colony Group, Commerce City; Duro Electric Co., Englewood; EC Electric Inc., Grand Junction;
Encore Electric Inc., Englewood; FCI Constructors Inc., Longmont; Interstates Cos., Ft. Collins; LPR Construction Co., Loveland; Milender White Construction Co., Arvada; Northern Electric Inc., Westminster; Pinkard Construction, Lakewood; RK Mechanical Inc., Denver; and TIC - The Industrial Co. Southwest District, Englewood.

Gold STEP awards were presented to AMI Mechanical Inc., Thornton; BT Construction Inc., Henderson; Design Mechanical, Louisville; Fiore & Sons Inc., Denver; Interstate Electrical Contractors Inc., Wheat Ridge; LEI Cos. Inc., Denver; Mays Concrete Inc., Grand Junction; McClone Construction Co., Wheat Ridge; MTech Mechanical, Westminster; Power Design Inc., St. Petersburg, Fla.; and Spacecon Specialty Contractors Inc., Castle Rock.

Achieving Silver STEP awards were ADK Electric Corp., Englewood; Adolfson & Peterson Construction, Aurora; Central Mechanical Inc., Erie; Diamond Drilling and Sawing Co. Inc., Denver; Greiner Electric LLC, Littleton; Metro Fence Co., Commerce City; Parkway Electric & Communications LLC, Loveland; Piper Electric Co. Inc. Arvada; Shaw Construction, Denver; and White Construction Group, Castle Rock.

ABC says the STEP program is an effective tool for newly formed companies as well. As a new company, 4D Fire Protection completed the application at the participant level and will be able to qualify at one of the five categories in the next application period.

ABC also honored a number of member companies for their efforts in making safety a priority on construction sites. Safety awards were presented in the categories below.
