Award of Merit Safety: Vancouver V.A. Medical Center
Weather wouldn't cooperate on the new $5.9-million outpatient specialty care clinic in Vancouver, Wash., but ample precipitation didn't dampen jobsite safety efforts.
A site-specific safety plan clearly communicated safety task assignments for each worker, a plan that wasn't set aside even as the work schedule was accelerated and sloppy weather conditions interrupted traditional job flow. Safety audits were conducted and documented daily, complete with corrective actions and lessons learned.
More than 36,000 man-hours were logged on the project without any lost time. Kevcon Inc., Escondido, Calif., instituted its Think/Act/Be SAFE program, created by President and CEO Kev Kutina.
