University of Nevada, Reno According to data from the Nevada Dept. of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation, at the start of the recession, the Reno area had 18,600 construction jobs, Harris says. Construction employment declined to a low of 7,400 in March 2011 and rose to 10,800 jobs in May 2014. From the start of the recession in December 2007 to the latest regional employment data in May 2014, the construction sector in the Washoe SMSA declined by 41.9%.
