Joan Stearns Johnsen, FCIArb. is the current chair of the Section of Dispute Resolution of the American Bar Association. Joan practices as an arbitrator and mediator and is on the panels of the American Arbitration Association, the International Institute for Conflict Prevention and Resolution (“CPR”), the American Health Law Association, and the Financial Industry Regulatory Association. She is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators and is certified by the International Mediation Institute. Joan also teaches negotiation, mediation, and arbitration at the University of Florida Levin College of Law where she is the director of the Institute for Dispute Resolution. Prior to becoming a neutral, Joan was associate general counsel for the Commodity Exchange Inc. and assistant commodities counsel for Smith Barney both in New York, and an enforcement attorney for the Commodity Futures Trading Commission in Washington, D.C. Joan serves on the Council of CPR, the board of directors of the Miami International Arbitration Society, and as an officer at large of the Mediation Committee of the International Bar Association (“IBA”).
