For years, ENR Southwest has conducted Best Projects and Top 20 Under 40 awards, recognizing excellence in construction execution and young talented engineers, architects and project managers, among others. This year, we’ve added a new one: The Legacy Award.

This new award is exactly what the label indicates: a special recognition that will be unveiled and presented at our Best Projects regional event. Age is not a factor, neither is working status. A winner could be 40 or 80, still working or retired. What is important is that whatever he or she has done in the course of their career to this point will leave a lasting impression on the industry.

My colleague (as well as ENR Bureau Chief and California Regional Editor), Scott Blair, may have said it best on his blog: “We’ll be looking for nominees with a history of innovation, outstanding career highlights and an engagement within the industry and the surrounding community.”

We will be accepting nominations for the ENR Southwest Legacy Award through Oct. 1. Yes, you can nominate yourself, although someone else can also nominate you. Confidentiality is assured, if requested, until the final stage.

All nominations should include:

  • A resume with major career highlights such as innovations and key projects or initiatives worked on or managed
  • A letter of reference from the nominator or a colleague familiar with key elements of the individual’s career
  • A list of publications, white papers, articles, news stories written about (or authored by) the individual relevant to his or her career; photos of work are encouraged
  • A photo of the nominee
  • A summary of major activities outside the industry such as mentoring, teaching, political and/or government offices held

The deadline for Legacy Award submissions is Oct. 1. Please email your submission directly to me at john.guzzon@mhfi.com (indicate Legacy Award Nomination somewhere in your subject line, please) and be sure to include all the components noted in the bulleted list above. The winner of this award will be honored at our Nov. 14 annual Best Projects awards banquet in Phoenix.

For those on Twitter, tweet with the hashtag #SWConstructionLegacy to suggest folks and to promote discussions.
