ENR Southwest continues its recognition of outstanding regional companies with the profile of this year’s selection of General Contractor of the Year, coming up in our July 16 print edition.
This award coincides with the annual Top General Contractors Ranking, in which firms are ranked based on their annual revenue. However, to be nominated for GC of the Year, firms not only had to demonstrate fiscal success, but also had to excel in sustainability and social responsibility. Other considerations included each firm’s safety record, workplace satisfaction and the caliber of upcoming projects.
Two finalists were selected this year, both worthy of the top prize. Kiewit Corp.'s Phoenix office had a great year in 2011, increasing revenue by 50%. They also fit the bill as far as safety and community involvement, and they have several sizeable projects in the southwest, including PHX Sky Train Phase 1a and the Valley Metro Light Rail extension into central Mesa, Ariz.
The second finalist was Okland Construction Co. The firm essentially doubled its revenue in 2011 and has a great variety of projects underway and coming up. Safety and sustainability were big plusses for the firm too.
Voting occurred last week among all of the ENR regional sections editors, and I can reveal now that the winner is: Okland Construction!
One of the biggest factors in the decision was Okland’s completion of its LEED-Platinum-certified Tempe, Ariz. office at the end of 2011. Indeed, many of the firm’s projects are pursuing LEED certification, totaling $45 million of green revenue in 2011.
Recently completed projects include the ASU Health Services Building Expansion & Renovation and Northern Edge Casino in Upper Fruitland, N.M.-- one of 2011’s Top Starts. Current projects include the Gilbert Temple and Tuba City Justice Center (one of 2010's Top Starts). Expected to break ground later in the year is the Phoenix Biomedical Research Collaborative Lab and Office Building, designed by this year’s ENR Southwest Design Firm of the Year, SmithGroupJJR.

DPR Construction won the award in 2011, and the firm was no slouch this year either, with a revenue jump of 68% in 2011 on top of a similar jump in 2010. As a recent winner, the firm was not eligible for nomination again this year.
Congratulations to Okland and Kiewit, plus all the other firms that not only survived, but thrived and flourished in these difficult economic times.
