ENR Texas & Louisiana has named Memorial Hermann Health System as its 2016 Owner of the Year.
Each year, ENR’s regional editions select an owner to spotlight based on several criteria: the number and size of current projects under way and in development; sustainability goals; diversity; innovation; and reputation in the industry.
Past winners include Houston Methodist in 2015, the Texas Dept. of Transportation in 2014, Dallas Area Rapid Transit in 2013 and DFW International Airport in 2012.
Memorial Hermann Health System has a number of construction projects going on right now, the biggest of which is the $650 million Breaking New Ground Project, Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center’s Renovation and Expansion Project, which is part of the largest multi-construction project initiative in Memorial Hermann’s history that is designed to meet current and future healthcare needs in the Greater Houston area.
The Texas Medical Center project, which broke ground in May 2015 and will be complete in 2019, is one of five major construction and renovation projects in the greater Houston area. Other projects are located in Cypress, Katy, Pearland and Sugar Land. Construction on these projects began in 2014 and will extend through 2020.
Memorial Hermann Healthcare System is the largest not-for-profit healthcare system in Texas and currently has 13 hospitals and numerous services located throughout the greater Houston area. The healthcare provider has 5,500 affiliated physicians and 24,000 employees and is ranked as one of the nation's Top 5 large health systems by Truven Health for patient safety and quality. In the 2015-2016, U.S. News & World Report, TIRR Memorial Hermann moved up in the rankings as the best rehabilitation hospital in Texas and No. 2 in the United States.
In 2007, the Memorial Hermann Community Benefit Corp., a subsidiary of Memorial Hermann Healthcare System, was created as a non-profit organization charged with identifying innovative ways to ensure that residents, especially those who are uninsured or underinsured in the greater Houston area, have access to the health care they need. Through this endeavor, Memorial Hermann Healthcare System contributes more than $330 million annually in uncompensated care.
