Heavy industrial contractor Turner Industries Group is ENR Texas & Louisiana’s 2013 Contractor of the Year. With a strong focus on petroleum sector work, the oil and gas boom has been good to Turner Industries, which saw regional revenues peak above $2 billion in 2012. In recent years, the company has greatly expanded its services, offering clients more one-stop-shopping options. Last year, the company completed a $50-million hydrocracker project for Valero in Port Arthur, Texas, and started $23 million in work at Sasol North America’s Echo 1 project in Westlake, La.

Turner Industries has also tallied an impressive safety record. In 2012, it won the CURT Construction Industry Safety Excellence Award in the Heavy Construction category. It also earned the 2012 CURT Workforce Development Award—a significant initiative, given the rising demand for skilled trades along the Gulf Coast. The firm is also recruiting pipefitters and welders from the new North Baton Rouge Industrial Training Initiative. NBRITI is a collaborative pilot project, conceived by ExxonMobil, the Capital Area Technical College, Baton Rouge Community College, along with industrial-, nonprofit-, and community-resource partners. Graduates complete an intensive, short-term training program to prepare them for careers in the areas of pipefitting, welding, and electrical trades.
